The SR71 Blackbird was one of the multiple jobs that I had from Laminar Research to be released in Xplane11. In fact, it was the last plane I built and was released in Xplane11, as 3D artist in Laminar Research.
There was an SR71 in XPlane 11 developed by other guy. The cockpit was nice, but the exterior didn't have the minimum quality required for the new XP11, so I was the man to rebuild the full exterior with more detail. So I started from scratch, and built all in my old 3DStudio Max 2011. I had problems understanding the "new" PBR textures, so in the second video you can see what I sent to Laminar after a good result in the shine of it. But this was not the result that they expected as it had to be more mate. After some fights with the 2D program, I managed to have the result that you can see in Xplane11 already. It is much easier with Substance Painter. Sad noone said me about this program when I was inside Laminar. I would have done marvelous things with it. 2D way is very complicated.
After finishing the exterior, I used the 3D cockit already created and added more polygons, remap everything and made more dirty textures. As said the geometry was already there (I had to fix some stuff), but the texture was totally new. You can see it in the first video.
